SCHUYLERVILLE - On Wednesday morning dozens of people from the Capital Region came out to pay their respects to a Vietnam veteran they never knew.

On Tuesday it was announced that Ambrose Jacob, a Vietnam veteran from Putnam County, does not have any family to honor him one last time before he was buried at the Saratoga National Cemetery. Officials reached out to the community for help and dozens of people showed up.

Butch Hyde is one of the New York Patriot Guard Riders who paid their respects to Jacob on Wednesday.

"I heard about it yesterday on our website and just figured I'll be there,” Hyde said.

In addition to not having family, Hyde said many Vietnam vets didn’t get the recognition they deserved when they returned home decades ago.

“Things have changed though, for the good we need to honor the vets,” Hyde said.

Jacob was from the Town of Kent. He joined the Army in 1964 and served as a Communications Center Specialist for 3 years. He became a Specialist 4th Class and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

The funeral director in Putnam County wasn't able to find any family members after Jacob died in September.

Chris O’Brien, a Program Support Assistant at Saratoga National Cemetery, said every couple of months they ask the community to come out for similar ceremonies.

O'Brien said service men and women from all over the country are buried there.

“I know we've had people from as far off as Alaska, a lot of Florida, California, you know because people are from this area but in the military you move away,” O’Brien said. “You know you go away for 10, 12, 20 years some people, but they settle in different locations down south or out west but they want to be buried home because this is New York State that's what they're proud of.”
