East Greenbush police: Discount Flooring owner made-up robbery

August 24, 2018 10:51 AM

East Greenbush police now believe that the owner of the Discount Flooring store in East Greenbush made up the story about a robbery earlier this week.

Mark A. Slocum, 59 of Rensselaer, was arrested Thursday. East Greenbush detectives viewed surveillance footage from multiple businesses in the area. They say no one matching Slocum's description of the robber is on any recording.

Slocum told police that a white male had entered the store around 10 a.m. Monday morning with a knife and robbed him of cash. Slocum gave a detailed description of the suspect, including tattoos and a rabbit's foot on his backpack. During the manhunt, nearby senior centers and nursing homes were put on on lockdown. Police used dogs and state police helicopters to search the area. No lookalike could be found.

Slocum is on ankle bracelet surveillance and charged with falsely reporting an incident, perjury, making a false sworn statement and larceny. His case will be heard in East Greenbush Town Court.
