Man drowns in Erie Canal in Montgomery County

August 01, 2017 12:22 PM

ROOT - The body of a 25-year old man from Gloversville was pulled from the Erie Canal Tuesday morning, about three hours after he had slipped off the bank he was fishing from. Because he couldn't swim, he couldn't fight the current.

It happened near Lock 13.

Family and friends gathered on shore as word spread of the recovery of the body of Joshua McSpirit of Gloversville. He and his friend had finished work and came down to a favorite spot where the fish gather just east of the lock.

The operation involved the airboat and other specialized teams from Montgomery, Fulton and Saratoga Counties -- all racing against the clock and the current with control from the Canal Corporation.

The sheriff says they average one operation like this a year and they hope that number doesn't go up.
