TROY - Arustrated crowd of Trojans, chanting "vote" and demanding Troy City Council members vote on the 'Families And Communities Together' act formerly known as the Sanctuary City resolution.
This, after Council President, Carmella Mantello revealed a bombshell that the resolution was null and void according to Robert's Rules, a technicality that stated it too much time had passed and it needed to be tabled or voted on back in December.
The crowd and council members visibly infuriated that months of discussion had seemingly been wasted.
Nonetheless, dozens turned out to speak for and against the resolution.
Impassioned applause came from supporters after a minor by the name of Juniper, spoke about having lost a friend who moved to the West Coast out of fear of deportation.
"Families are being torn apart and you’re doing nothing. They’re people that don’t feel safe in their home and that is just wrong and that is all I have to say."
Ultimately, Council members Garrett, Paratore, Cummings and Bissember voted to pass the FACT Act.
Council President Mantello introduced a local law, that if passed will put the topic of Sanctuary City status to a referendum.
The resolution now goes to Mayor Patrick Madden's desk for a signature or a veto.
