Three fairs open heading into Labor Day Weekend

August 28, 2019 02:44 PM

FONDA – Once known as the Montgomery County Agricultural Society, now it's the Fonda Fair. It takes over the Fonda Speedway and Fairgrounds this week. The 178th edition is one of three fairs in the Capital Region this week. The others are the 179th Columbia County Fair and the bicentennial of the Schaghticoke Fair.

"We're looking forward to a great fair," said Richard Kennedy, a former dairy farmer now in his 14th year as President of the Fonda Fair. "We've got good weather in store for the week. We put a special order in so with a few hiccups coming along we should be really good."

The fair opened Wednesday with Marianna Zemken, 6, and her sister Gabriella Martineau, who turns 13 on Friday, up early and looking after their goats including Paprika, Charity and Serenity from Peridot Farms out of Amsterdam.

(Mom) "usually does morning chores," said Gabriella. "I do afternoon. And if we ever have hay loads, I'm the one throwing, stacking."

"They get to watch TV at nighttime," said mom Rebecca Martineau. "Other than that they go to school, come home, do chores. By the time I get home it's dinner and off to bed…It gives them character and it gives them more responsibility. They understand. They know what they need to do. Animals depend on you so that's the best way to go about it."

Farming builds character for them and a few feet away, Heather Brooke Hill Farm is building a business with its team of Clydesdales.

"We do a lot of parades and things like that," said John Leavitt, adding, "They're just easy to work around. They're just very friendly horses and gentle."

The first thing on the agenda in Scott Hall is Vegetable Judging. Martin Ewald has been doing that for 10 years.

"I'm actually looking for uniformity, size, color and if it comes down to being too close to call, then I'm going to have to go to taste," Ewald said.

The Fonda Fair runs through Labor Day.
