Food for thought from NYS farmers and food banks

LATHAM – Gallons and gallons of milk are off-loaded from Garelick Farms and is added to the rest of the assembled palettes at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. There are apples, onions, squash and cabbage from area farms ready for distribution.

As the New York Farm Bureau begins its annual meeting, it announced a donation of nine million lbs. of fresh food and farm products to regional food banks. That will translate into more than seven million meals provided to New Yorkers in need.

However, that number is down from 13 million lbs. donated last year. Officials say unsettled weather this spring and summer contributed to the drop. The state says the need has risen from 25-to-28 percent.

"This effort remains a priority for New York Farm Bureau and we are proud to partner with Feeding America and our outstanding regional food banks across the state," said David Fisher, New York Farm Bureau President.

Additionally, the New York Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee donated $500 from the national "Harvest for All" program after finishing runner-up in 2017.

"We encourage farmers across the state to think of their local food banks as a way to give back or when they have excess product that would otherwise go to waste," said Kristen Brown, New York Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee Chair.
