Gloversville teenager meets man he helped to save

September 25, 2018 11:15 PM

GLOVERSVILLE -- Alan Welke met Luke and Jamie Page in much better circumstances now than the last time, when he collapsed in the Cumberland Farms in Gloversville.

"By the time I got in the store, I couldn't breathe at all," said Welke.  "And that's when I grabbed a hold of the cashier's shoulder and told her I couldn't breathe and she hollered out, 'get an ambulance now!'  And that was all I remember."

13-year-old Luke Page saw the emergency.

"I ran outside and I told my mom and she comes inside, she puts him to the ground, starts doing compressions," he said.  "And I remind her she has a CPR mask.  I go out to the car and I get it."

"I am so incredibly proud of him," said Jamie Page about her son.  "He remained calm, collected.  He did exactly as I asked.  He stood by and just waited for me to give him instructions.  He didn't panic at all and I was just blown away by that."

Welke was in the hospital when he saw our story about Luke and said, that's the boy who saved me!

"He's my hero!" said Welke.

They were strangers.  Now, they share a powerful bond:  a boy and his mother and the man they helped save.

"I was thankful.  I was grateful," said Welke.  "Couldn't wait to meet him, or his mother.  I was just thankful they had that CPR mask.  That was the biggest thing everybody was talking about was the CPR mask."

"We were worried sick for days after the incident happened, not knowing who he was, what happened to him, how he was doing," said Jamie Page.

But now they see with their own eyes the outcome, that this story has a happy ending.

Welke says he still has to have surgery, but that he's doing much better, thanks to that chance meeting.

Before they left, they shared a group hug.  It was an emotional moment that left Welke overcome.

"It's amazing!" said Luke.  "I'm so thankful he's okay now."
