GLENVILLE – A sign on the door doesn't say much. Addressed to Valued Customers, Goldstock's Sporting Goods "will be closed until further notice. Thank you for your continued support..."

It's the same message posted on the business’s Facebook page. It mentions on how to get prepaid merchandise through an email address,, but that's it.

On Facebook, comments range from "Sad to hear this..." to "I've been going there since I was a little kid...I truly, truly hope this is temporary" to "this is heartbreaking" and "it's about what they've done for the community over the years."

Plus: "…professional customer service. BIG BOX retailers have smothered another Great Family business. BUY LOCAL!"

Goldstock’s opened in 1896. For generations, it was located in downtown Schenectady before moving out on Freeman's Bridge Road in Glenville. Besides varsity jackets and baseball gloves, it is one of the oldest ski shops in the country.

Neighboring businesses had not heard about this abrupt closing. It has not been part of the Chamber of Commerce since the 1980s. Its business website is also "no longer available."
