Grocery stores, bakeries busy catering to last-minute Thanksgiving shoppers

November 21, 2018 06:42 PM

Grocery stores and bakeries were slammed on Wednesday with people hoping to pick up last minute items.

At Bella Napoli in Troy, there were lines all day. The bakery has been preparing for weeks. Some of the big sellers were butter rolls, dinner rolls and pies. A separate room had people busily packing boxes and boxes of cookies.

The bakery has done 65,000 rolls in the last two days and 1,500 pies.

Over in Delmar, Perfect Blend Bakery & Café had their biggest day of the year. By Wednesday evening, only a few pies on just one table were left to be picked up.

"Everything's kind of scratch here. We started from grandmother's recipes and kind of just took it into my recipes from college and we try to keep everything as local as possible. All our apples come from Indian Ladder. We peel and slice every single apple. Nothing's frozen," noted Dan Casey, with Perfect Blend.

The owners have help in the kitchen from seasoned staff – including their own mothers.

"We have a good system down. We get in a little earlier, but we're usually done by late afternoon. So the bulk of our baking was [Tuesday] and we had all the pies in the oven by about 3:00 in the afternoon and boxed and ready for pickup by about 5:30. So it wasn't too bad," explained Brendan McCann, with Perfect Blend.

"Thank God the weather held up," said Mario Mainella, with Bella Napoli. People are coming in and hopefully, this is their last stop. The last stop is always to get the dessert. So you got your turkey, you got the stuffing. Come down to Bella Napoli to pick up your sweets."

Bella Napoli was open until 10 p.m. Wednesday. They're open again on Thanksgiving Day from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. However, they suggest you come down before the big Turkey Trot.
