GUILDERLAND -- Karen Valente's delivered packages were missing, so she checked her cameras.

Her home security system caught a woman driving up and brazenly taking a stack of packages that had just been delivered at about 3 p.m.

"Initially, I was very upset, mad. Then when I calmed down a little bit, I felt very violated," said Valente.

She posted the videos on Facebook, but she was surprised at what happened next. Friends shared, and strangers did too.

"And I couldn't believe how quickly it got shared, and how many times it got shared and viewed, and how angry and upset people were about it," she said.

Valente also called Guilderland police and made a report.

However that night, she heard someone in her driveway.

The woman had come back, this time with a letter of apology and the packages, which had all been opened.

"She showed back up at my door with the packages," said Valente.  "I think she was ashamed. Because from what she told me, somehow it got back to her that she was on social media."

Karen thanks everyone for their help with sharing.

"I was glad to see that Facebook and social media worked in a positive way for a change," she said.

NewsChannel 13 asked what was in the packages, but Karen would rather not say because they are Christmas presents.

As the holiday shopping season gets underway, she says her number one piece of advice is to get security cameras and to track your shipments.

Other tips:

  • Use an Amazon Locker. You can send your packages to secure lockers in many locations around the Capital Region.
  • Have your packages delivered to your workplace or to a neighbor you know will be home.
  • Schedule deliveries for when you will be home.
  • Require a signature for deliveries.
