Health Beat: Polio-like Disease
November 14, 2018 01:49 PM
There's a worrisome ailment targeting children across the country. It's a polio-like disease called acute flaccid myelitis -- and doctors don't know what's causing it. Moreover, more children have been diagnosed with the mysterious, paralyzing illness in recent weeks. This year could surpass the numbers seen in similar outbreaks in 2014 and 2016. Although still rare, the CDC says there have been 90 cases spread among 27 states this year. What happens is some children lose the ability to move their face, neck, back, arms or legs. The symptoms tend to occur about a week after the children had a fever and respiratory illness.
