A man is behind bars in Troy in connection with the city's first homicide of the year.
Rashad Edwards, 34, is charged in connection with the stabbing death of 21-year-old Brianna Haughton on Jan. 13.
“It appears to be a domestic violence incident,” said Deputy Chief Dan DeWolf with the Troy Police Department. “It’s terrible, it’s a horrible tragedy, senseless death.”
Deputy Chief DeWolf said Edwards and Haughton were in a relationship. He said Edwards lived at the home on Pawling Avenue where Haughton was found dead.
Law enforcement sources said Edwards was arrested the same night of the murder for a parole violation. He was being held at the Rensselaer County Jail.
Deputy Chief DeWolf said he has prior arrests, including for possessing a loaded handgun. DeWolf said he hopes the arrest brings closure for Haughton’s family.
“It brings some sense of justice to Brianna and her family,” said DeWolf. “It doesn’t bring her back, it doesn’t make you feel any better as far as the hurt that you feel because the loss of a loved one, but at least it makes him pay for what he did.”
Meanwhile the community has been rallying around the Haughton family.
“She was always smiling, always happy, she wanted everyone to be just as happy,” said Haughton’s former classmate Sierra Smith.
A GoFundMe page has raised more than $10,000. It’s to pay for Haughton’s funeral and help with her family care for her son, Justice.
“Everyone kind of like reached out for each other and really came together,” said Smith.
Smith started an Amazon registry for items for Haughton’s son.
“I think helping by donating just one item, helps you feel like maybe you reached out a little bit and helped them through this tough time,” said Smith.
Edwards is set to be arraigned Wednesday in Rensselaer County Court.
