Icy roads cause car to crash into Latham salon

November 14, 2018 05:58 PM

LATHAM - If you were out Wednesday morning, you know that roads iced over quickly. That caused some accidents. It also meant a big surprise for the owner of Blush Salon off Old Loudon Road in Latham.

A car came over the grass and smashed into the hair salon, going through the front of the building. They've swept up the glass and boarded up the building. However, for a while Wednesday morning, the car was still sitting partially inside the salon.

Erin Akins has had this popular salon for five years. She got quite a shock when she got the call about what happened. She noticed when she put her daughter on the bus that it was slippery outside.

Inside the salon, there was glass everywhere. They had just finished doing a lot of decorating the day before for Christmas -- including putting up a tree. Everything got smushed forward.

However, business still goes on. They had to re-schedule a few clients Wednesday morning because of the car and it was cold because of the gaping hole in the wall.

No one was inside the salon when the crash happened. Akins says thank goodness for that -- and for the fact that the driver wasn't hurt.

People had a hard time with Wednesday morning's school drop-off or commute.  A drive that typically took 10 minutes took people at least four or five times that. It was bumper to bumper eastbound on I-90 for a while, with car after car off on the side of the road after accidents.

Back at the salon, Akins says this is not a great time for some renovation work. It's getting into the busy holiday season. However, she's looking at the bright side -- and happy everyone is okay.

In fact, she says her family has pitched in to help, her staff is helping – and she says even some other local salons have offered for them to go there to work if it's not do-able here. So she says the community has been great.

It's just the beginning of the winter weather!
