June 14, 2019 06:20 PM

Autopsy results have been released for the man who died in a fatal Slingerlands fire on Thursday morning. They show he died from smoke inhalation. Police are waiting to release his identity until all family is notified.

While many unanswered questions remain, the fire is not considered criminal in nature. Meanwhile, police and fire investigators have cleared the scene at Meadowbrook Apartments.

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. on Thursday.

Bethlehem police say there were no sprinklers installed in the building because it's about 50 years old give or take. So it was not required to comply with code when it was built.

NewsChannel 13 has heard conflicting accounts on whether or not the fire alarms were working. Some neighbors told NewsChannel 13 on Thursday that they didn't hear an alarm, but instead were woken up by their pet, a neighbor or the loud crackling of the burning wood.

However, a person NewsChannel 13 spoke with on Friday says she's sure she heard smoke detectors going off. She says the complex comes around regularly to make sure they're working properly.

NewsChannel 13 continues to follow this story. We will bring you updates as we get them on WNYT.com and our later newscasts.
