Texas man plans new life for former Saratoga County sanatorium

PROVIDENCE - It looks a little like a setting for a horror film these days, but many years ago, the once-stately property served as a tuberculosis treatment center.
"It was a beautiful building at one time," said Saratoga County Attorney Stephen Dorsey.
The Saratoga County Homestead was last used as a county nursing home in 1972. Since then, the damage has been extensive - marble floors have been destroyed or removed, the roof is caving in spots, and windows and doors have been removed or vandalized.
The county recently took possession of it from a delinquent owner, got EPA to remove the asbestos and auctioned it off online.
"And it worked. We found a bidder in Texas," said Dorsey.
"I just absolutely fell in love with the property," said James Walk of Denton, Texas, during a recent video conference call with NewsChannel 13.
Walk says he wants to renovate the property and doesn't want to tear down the old Homestead, or the nearby caretaker house.
He bought the property for $55,100 without visiting it.
"I was taught take big steps. I work for a company with big visionary leaders and they tell you when you see something you've gotta go for it. And so I saw it and I decided I'm going for it."
Walk works for Cisco and is a veteran of the Army and the Marine Corps. He wants to turn the property into a retreat for veterans.
"And take a place like that, that's out in the woods, it's serene and turning that into kind of a destination or a retreat for veterans with PTSD and others as well."
Providence Town Supervisor Sandra Winney would like to see apartments built there, but said she'll support whatever Walk decides.
"Make it nice for the community. Get it back on the tax rolls. Make it so that it's prosperous for us all."
Walk said Tuesday that he was signing the deed and sending it back right away.
He's set up an online fundraiser for those interested in helping him restore the property. It's at the link below.
