Nearly 370,000 New Yorkers filed first-time claims for unemployment last week. The Capital Region is one of the hardest-hit areas. However, there's a whole other level of uncertainty and stress facing parents who are divorced - or are getting divorced.
In New York state, losing your job does not automatically terminate a person's responsibility to pay child support or alimony - even in the event of a global pandemic.
To change support agreements, the courts have to grant a modification. With courts closed - and such modifications not falling within the realm of essential matters - options are few.
