COBLESKILL -- Kenneth Meyers, 23, of Coblekill was captured on surveillance video just before police said he bolted out of the police station while under arrest.

"He took advantage of a situation and made his own situation worse," said Cobleskill Police Chief Richard Bialkowski.

It all started late Thursday night when police went to a home in the village to investigate an assault. Meyers was their main suspect and he was nowhere to be found. Investigators eventually tracked him down at another home in the village.

"We also determined that he was also wanted by the Schoharie County Probation Department as well as the Rotterdam Police Department," Bialkowski said.

Police said Meyers resisted arrest. That's when they were forced to Tase him. They brought him back to the station for processing.

"An officer had turned away to do some paperwork at which time the suspect, who was still handcuffed and also had a waist belt restraint on, ran out the back door," Bialkowski said.

He ran out into a wide open field of thick brush about 20 yards from the police station. Thick fog and heavy rain at the time made it nearly impossible to find Meyers. Police called in reinforcement.

"We were also assisted by the ENCON Police K-9 unit. We deployed our own K-9 unit," he said.

The New York State Police also came out to help. Three hours into the search, they nabbed him, still in the brush, handcuffed about a football field away from the police station. Meyers was already in trouble for a parole violation. In addition to possible charges in Rotterdam and assault in Coblekill, he's now charged with resisting arrest, petit larceny and escape.
