CANAAN - A long-overdue paving project is now underway on Route 22 in Canaan.

It's a story NewsChannel 13 has been following since March, after residents there reached out for help when they felt the State Department of Transporation was ignoring their concerns.

Milling on a four-mile stretch of Route 22 began Monday, and the DOT hopes to have the project completed within a week.

The Canaan town supervisor says the road hasn't been repaved in 25 years, and surface conditions had deteriorated so much that cars were losing parts, getting flat tires and in some cases getting into accidents. They had even put warning signs up to alert drivers to dangerous conditions.

The weather has delayed the project a few times, but on Monday, DOT crews began milling the old surface up.

DOT estimates three days of milling, followed by three days of paving.
