Lucas Hembree's parents thought he wouldn't live past 10. Now he's getting ready to celebrate his 13th birthday. His parents are asking people around the world to send birthday cards.

Lucas has Sanfilippo syndrome, a type of childhood dementia that causes brain damage. The average lifespan for a child with the disease is 12 to 14 years old. Lucas is on Hospice care.
