COLONIE -- 62-year-old Marla Kellert of Loudonville walked into Colonie town court with her attorney, Andrew Safranko, and her husband.
She's accused of stealing more than $30,000 in cash from the Loudonville home of a longtime friend.
"Obviously this is not a good day and she's upset, and we've got to work to see what the charges are and where we go from here," said Kellert's attorney, Andrew Safranko.
Police say the victim returned to his Old Niskayuna Road home last Wednesday unexpectedly and was surprised to find Kellert there, and that she made some excuse.
After that, police say, he discovered his cash was missing.
Police executed a search warrant at Kellert's house on Ross Court.
"And we did recover not only a large portion of that money, but evidence showing that she used some of that money to purchase jewelry, a part for an appliance, as well as made some deposits into her checking account," said Colonie Police Lieutenant Robert Winn.
But police say Kellert may also be facing other charges based on what else they found.
"During the execution of the search warrant, we discovered a large amount of jewelry," said Lt. Winn. "At the time, we were not looking for jewelry. However, we were aware that she was a suspect in a crime in 2011 in Guilderland, where jewelry was taken. We photographed that jewelry and made contact with Guilderland police, and they contacted their victim, who did identify some of that jewelry as hers."
The victim's family watched as Kellert was arraigned on the felony charges of burglary and grand larceny.
They are outraged that she betrayed a longtime friend.
They say Kellert was trusted with the code for the garage recently when the victim was ill with the flu.
She pleaded not guilty.
"She's been in the community for a long time," said defense attorney Safranko. "Her husband and family are lifelong residents, and it's certainly shocking to anyone that knew her."
Police say they would like to hear from anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Kellert.
