Sidewalk snowmen warm up Middleburgh

December 14, 2018 06:45 PM

MIDDLEBURGH – If you're looking for a new tradition this season, take a drive to Schoharie County and take in some sidewalk snowmen.

Following the success of the scarecrows that lined the main drag, the Rotary Club has encouraged businesses to build snowmen. It was first for the 20th Miracle on Main Street celebration and now, it gives the street a unique look outside specialty shops, restaurants and municipal buildings.

The 32 homemade, handmade snowmen follow the scarecrows from October, also to promote local business. All proceeds from entries and votes for the favorites go to four food pantries.

"I think people want to participate," said Fran Kossmann, owner of M&J's Café. "Not to mention the amount of donations we gathered for the food pantry. It's been amazing between the two contests."

There's a quilt, one made from paint buckets, one from old tires, one with propane tanks and a funnel nose, another with bowling pins and "Rusty" with a spark plug nose.

"We had a big Small Business Saturday, so people are looking to come to Middleburgh to look at the snowmen, to get something to eat, to do some shopping, just nice to have people want to come to us," said Joan Wissert of the Rotary Club.

Overall they have 502 donations for the snowmen after 350 for the scarecrows.

You can still bid on 10 snowmen that can become part of your holiday display. The deadline is Thursday, December 20. Those have "You can bid on me" signs. Send your name, phone number and maximum bid to Joan Wissert, PO Box 27, Middleburgh, NY 12122 or to middleburghsnowmen@gmail.com.
