Greene County is the most dangerous county in New York state, outside of New York City. That's what 2020 data from the Division of Criminal Justice Services finds.

They take the number of violent crimes submitted by police, divide it by a county's population and multiply it by 100,000.

Greene County's score was 411.3, Albany County came in a bit further behind at 367.1, Schenectady County is just below that at 360.2

Saratoga County is the safest county in the Capital Region, with a violent crime rate of 95.4.

The most dangerous county in New York state is Bronx, while the least dangerous is Putnam.

A list of the top 20 counties with the highest crime outside of the New York City area is below:

  4. Schenectady – 360.2
  5. Onondaga – 354.4
  6. Broome  – 350.7
