TROY - Three children ages nine, eight and three-years old are lucky to be alive after the home located at 289 4th Avenue in North Troy went up in flames Sunday.
“There's a whole bunch of witnesses that will tell you the moms never home,” said 16-year-old Destiny Collins. “The kids are always outside by their selves.”

Troy fire officials said the children may be behind the fire.

“We have reports of three children that were left unattended overnight and we believe that they had something to do with the fire,” said Troy Fire Chief Tom Garrett.

Collins who was a tenant at the home until just a few months ago, said she is not surprised since her family can hardly recall seeing the children's mother at home.

“When their mom's not home, like they'll come out the windows and run around, no shoes was terrible,” Collins said.

Troy fire officials responded to the scene just after 10 am.

“First arriving companies found heavy fire,” Garrett said. “Went through the building.”

The home is a total loss.

“Smoke, water, fire damage like I said a lot of heavy fire damage,” said Garrett. “The house will be able to be reconstructed but, total loss at this time.

Collins said the house wasn't in good shape to begin with.

“The roof…like we always had to go on the roof and put covers up because it would always leak or something was coming through the floor,” she said. “A refrigerator or something's not working. Sink's not working. Water. It was bad.”

Collins blames the landlord.

“Because he wouldn't keep up with the place,” she said. “Like the place was a mess. Like all upstairs, downstairs. It was terrible.”
All that's left of the home is a charred shell of what it used to be.

Luckily, fire officials said everyone walked away without a scratch.

The fire remains under investigation.

Child protective services is also investigating.

The Red Cross is assisting those who have been displaced.
