New York Canal System opens to recreational boats on Friday

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Part of the New York State Canal System is opening Friday for recreational boaters, but several sections remain closed due to high water from heavy rain.

The Erie Canal from lock E-2 in Waterford to E-8 in Scotia will open Friday at 7 a.m. Also opening Friday is the section from Lock 28A in Lyons to Lock 35 in Lockport, as well as the Cayuga-Seneca Canal.

Opening is delayed from Lock E-8 in Scotia to E-22 in Rome and from E-24 in Baldwinsville to E-27 in Lyons, as well as the Oswego and Champlain canals.

Boaters will be able to access the western end of Oneida Lake from Erie Canal Lock E-23 in Brewerton.

Tolls have been waived on recreational boats through 2021 on the 524-mile system.
