ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Part of the New York State Canal System opened Friday for recreational boaters, but several sections remain closed due to high water from heavy rain.

The Erie Canal from lock E-2 in Waterford to E-8 in Scotia opened Friday at 7 a.m. Also opening Friday is the section from Lock 28A in Lyons to Lock 35 in Lockport, as well as the Cayuga-Seneca Canal.

Opening is delayed from Lock E-8 in Scotia to E-22 in Rome and from E-24 in Baldwinsville to E-27 in Lyons, as well as the Oswego and Champlain canals.

Boaters will be able to access the western end of Oneida Lake from Erie Canal Lock E-23 in Brewerton.

Tolls have been waived on recreational boats through 2021 on the 524-mile system.
