The New York State Bar Association is launching a new effort designed to protect local news outlets as the industry continues to shrink.
The association announced Monday that it's creating a task force to study the problem and provide a legal perspective on the challenges facing American journalism.
According to the association, the number of local news organizations in New York has fallen by 34 percent since 2004.
David McCraw, the deputy general counsel for the New York Times, will co-chair the task force.
The group plans to hold hearings in New York City, Albany and Syracuse. They hope to release their findings next year.
