Niskayuna man wakes up to two men in house, police asking for public's help

Niskayuna police are asking for your help to find the two men who broke into an elderly man's house on Ruffner Road Thursday morning.

Police say the elderly man had an "interaction" with the two men, and he only had a few minor cuts that didn't need medical attention.

The man wasn't able to get a good look at the intruders, and since it was just this one house, Niskayuna's deputy chief says the department doesn't have much to work with.

Neighbors say the last burglary they remember in the Ruffner Road neighborhood happened three decades ago.

Police wouldn't tell NewsChannel 13 too much on this one. They're keeping the information they do have to themselves, in order to use it against suspects when they catch someone.

"Anybody that might have seen something that night with regards to the vehicle that's not normally in the area, people that are normally in the area, and if somebody knocked on the door, or anything like that," said Deputy Chief Michael Stevens, asking for neighbors to call police with tips.

A reporter knocked on doors around the neighborhood. The victim wasn't home, but a neighbor across the street from the burglary told NewsChannel 13 she saw something suspicious. She didn't want to go on camera, but said of the two dozen trick-or-treaters Halloween night, she says one father brought his kids around twice. And he gave her a weird feeling. Unfortunately, she couldn't give us a description.

It's those small tips police are looking for. In the meantime, the advice is to lock your doors. The neighbors we talked to weren't worried about it happening again, but Albert Meyerer will be a little more careful.

"I'll be more cautious, I usually leave our garage door open if I'm in the backyard or something I'm going to be more cautious," said Meyerer.

Call Niskayuna Police at (518) 630-0911.
