New York State will soon be getting new license plates – and you can have a say in what they'll look like.

Gov. Cuomo announced a survey Monday to vote on five possible license plate designs. You can vote on the governor's website though Sept. 2.

The winning design become available in April 2020. It will replace the blue and white Empire plates, most of which are more than 10 years old.

The state DMV will also stop issuing the Empire Gold plates.

Once the new plates are available, vehicle owners with plates that are more than 10 years old will be issued new ones when they renew their registration. A $25 license plate replacement fee will be added to the cost of the registration renewal.

If you want to keep your license plate number on the new plate, that will cost an additional $20 fee.
