Before Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand died Tuesday morning, a number of police officers rushed to Albany Medical Center, where doctors were trying to save his life.

Even after his body left the hospital, troopers were going in and out all day on Tuesday, paying their respects to the 36-year-old man and his family.

Many people are emotional during this difficult time. It's not just at the hospital people are paying their respects. Different police agencies posted on social media all day Tuesday, saying their thoughts and prayers are with New York State Police and thousands of people are taking the time to comment on those posts.

Trooper VanNostrand is the 23rd member of the New York State Police to die in the line of duty in the last decade, according to the New York State Police Benevolent Association.

This year has been especially difficult for the Trooper family. VanNostrand is the second trooper they've lost in four months.

It's not just police paying their respects. Albany firefighters lined up outside their firehouse on New Scotland Avenue as police escorted VanNostrand's body out of Albany Medical Center. As police cars drove by, the firefighters saluted the van carrying his body.

One firefighter said no matter whether you're police or a firefighter, they're all public servants and they want to pay their respects.

Governor Cuomo has directed all flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Trooper VanNostrand.
