ALBANY - Five people were arrested Tuesday morning after police say they tried to distract officers and take three loaded handguns from a vehicle.

According to police, the officers were standing beside a parked vehicle inside Albany Medical Center's parking garage after an ongoing shooting investigation. That's when a woman approached and tried to distract them by claiming her vehicle was shot.

While one of the officers spoke with her, police say 27-year-old Taja Lewis and 28-year-old Oudasha Gause drove up alongside the parked vehicle being held as evidence. They opened the trunk using a spare key, and a struggle broke moments later between them and the officers. A bag was removed from the vehicle's trunk and placed into the awaiting car.

Police say Lewis and Gause were taken into custody by the officers. Meanwhile, the other car sped off towards the exit, but was stopped by responding officers arriving at the scene. The bag was tossed from the car and three loaded handguns were later found inside.

Police say four men were inside the vehicle. Three of them, 24-year-old Nysein Tolbert, 25-year-old Michael Carter, and 26-year-old Marcus Mansfield were taken into custody.

The three men, along with Lewis and Gause, have been charged with criminal possession of a weapon, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy. Lewis is facing additional charges after 12 grams of cocaine was found in her possesion.
