Shortly after arriving, they say 40-year-old Matt Novick came out with what appeared to be a semi-automatic rifle and began shooting at them. They fired back, hitting him several times.

Novick was taken to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, then flown to Albany Med. His condition is unknown.

Investigators say multiple bullet holes were found in one of the police cruisers.

The troopers who fired their weapons will be placed on paid administrative leave.
