Power back for Rensselaer seniors after nearly 24 hours in the dark

RENSSELAER - After nearly 24 hours, a senior apartment complex in Rensselaer has its power back.
National Grid crews have been working around the clock to get the Renwyck Apartments back online.
National Grid officials suspect lightning blew a fuse and knocked the power out. However, things got much more complicated from there.
They tried to replace the fuse, but unfortunately, that wasn't the fix. Then they changed all three lines hoping that would solve the problem. It didn't. That meant they had to bring in a new transformer. However, because the transformer dated back to the 1970s, the connections had to be readjusted.
If there's any damage to the building's wiring, the building will have to get an electric company in to look at it. One is already on standby.
National Grid crews replaced the blown fuse at Renwyck. The fuse blew again. They’re working on replacing the transformer now but it has to be retrofitted because the previous one dates back to the 70s. If that still doesn’t work the building may need to be rewired .@WNYT pic.twitter.com/UXr3gnELhk

Meanwhile, Rensselaer Mayor Richard Mooney says fire and police officers were also on scene all night. He says oxygen was donated to residents who needed it. Firefighters and police officers also went door-to-door every 45 minutes to check on residents.
He also said initially none of the elevators were working. Firefighters carried people up to the rooms who needed it.
Hear from one longtime resident who says this could be a teachable moment, by watching the video of Emily Burkhard's story.
Our @nationalgridus crews have restored power to the building after last night's storms. Underground system work can more time intensive than overhead work but crews got the work done and lights back on. https://t.co/FiUSaAD6TC
