Most brides go for the big wedding with lots of bridesmaids, the expensive dress, the cake, pictures and more. However, an Albany woman decided to give up all of that to help people in a faraway land. She also invited her friends to do the same.
Actress Rachael Yoder remembers a conversation with her then boyfriend, Michael, about his travels last year to Tanzania. That's where he met one woman in particular, named Asha. She explained how she lost her child eight years ago, because they didn't have a labor clinic.
Rachel and Michael have a theater company called the Outer Loop Theater Institute.
Michael was in Africa to meet with people and create theatre projects, but was moved by Asha's story. He and Rachael knew they needed to do more, so the couple both got married and asked all the people to take the money they would have spent on the wedding and put it towards helping to build the clinic.
They've expanded their theater and work part of the time there as well as in New York.
