The man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death in Troy last month pleaded not guilty on Wednesday afternoon.

Troy police say 34-year-old Rashad Edwards murdered 21-year-old Brianna Haughton at a home on Pawling Avenue back on January 13. NewsChannel 13 has been following this story since then.

Troy Police Deputy Chief Dan DeWolf called Haughton's death a horrible, senseless tragedy when he spoke with NewsChannel 13 on Tuesday night.

DeWolf says her body was found when police were called to do a welfare check at 491 Pawling Avenue.

Law enforcement sources tell NewsChannel 13 that Edwards has actually been in custody in the Rensselaer County Jail for over a month. We're told he was taken into custody for a parole violation on the night of the murder. Edwards had been arrested before for possessing a loaded handgun. DeWolf is calling this a domestic violence incident.

Haughton's 1-year-old son, Justice, was found safe elsewhere in Troy that night.

Family and friends have started a GoFundMe page and an Amazon registry to help pay for Haughton's funeral expenses as well as help care for Justice.

Haughton's former classmate told NewsChannel 13 that she was always smiling, always happy and wanted others to just as happy.

DeWolf says he hopes Edwards' arrest leads to some sort of closure for Haughton's family.

While the judge was reading the charges in court on Wednesday, Edwards started speaking over the judge and his attorney, William Roberts, saying he did not understand what he was being charged with. Hear more about that by watching the video of Emily Burkhard's story.
