'Real Heroes' honored by American Red Cross

TROY – Gail Moore has worked at the YWCA in Schenectady for five years. Among her work, she delivers messages, not babies. But three months ago she got a call she had to quickly respond to – deliver a baby.

"I got a phone call from the mother saying that she thought her water broke," Moore said, reluctantly sharing her story. "I had to go downstairs and when I got down there, her water did break and I'm like noooo. So I'm calling 911 and he walked me through it. I was frantic, I was out of control but he calmed me down."

She got Duane Vanderwerker on the phone. He talked her through it as calmly as he could.

"People do get frantic but you try to keep them calm, get them into a normal state of mind and keep them focused on what you need to have them do," Vanderwerker said.

The pair was part of more than a dozen honorees at the "Real Heroes Breakfast" put on by The American Red Cross of Northeastern New York at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy on Tuesday. They earned the Good Samaritan Award.

"You never expect yourself to be on the other side delivering a baby and when you are on the other side it's like 'Oh, my goodness,'" said Moore.

Anthony Powers of Middle Grove got the Youth Good Samaritan Hero Award for saving kids from a burning car in Galway in September: "I'm going to hang it on the wall. I'm going to frame it. I just want to thank the American Red Cross."
