A boat burst into flames on Saratoga Lake around midnight Sunday night, according to the New York State Police.

Volunteers from three fire companies - Quaker Springs, Malta Ridge and Arvin Hart - all responded to the north side of the lake and put it out. The driver of the boat, Robert Cowan, abandoned ship with a life preserver and was picked up by another boat on the lake, police said.

The shell of the 24-foot boat was towed to the state launch near Brown's Beach and impounded.

State police continue to investigate, but they say during their interview with Cowan, they discovered he had been drinking. He was arrested for operating the boat while intoxicated with a .13 blood alcohol level.
