Lake George to host first in nation vacation retreat home for ill kids and their families

LAKE GEORGE - Until recently, the light blue two-story home in the middle of the village was a law office. Soon, it will be a vacation home for seriously ill children and their families.

It's called Krantz Cottage, after the family who sold it to Ronald McDonald House for far less than market value.

The home is just a block from the beach.

When renovations are complete, it'll be a four-bedroom and two bath base camp for adventure and excursions around Lake George.

It'll be a respite for kids and families who need a break from treatment, or for those for whom treatment will no longer help.

"At a really lousy time in their lives, when their child's still going through some tough things, they'll have this family memory to keep with them," said Jeff Yule, executive director of Ronald McDonald Charities of the Capital Region.

Jeff Yule gets a little choked up at the thought of being able to bring smiles to kids who need them.

And he smiles as he thinks about this being the first of its kind Ronald McDonald House retreat in the country.

"Families with sick kids, mom or dad have stopped working. The money stopped, the bills pile up. Vacations are a dream. They don't always become a reality," said Yule.

The idea came about after Lake George Mayor Bob Blais toured Ronald McDonald House in Albany where his daughter volunteers.

"It just put something in my mind," said Blais. "I found out that the Krantz house was going to become available so we approached Mrs. Krantz with the concept and she bought into it and she made a wonderful donation toward the purchase of the house."

Yule says they need to raise about $300,000 to pay off the mortgage and renovations, and because the family stays will be all expenses paid, they need help from restaurants, stores and amusements.

Those who'd like to get involved and help get Krantz Cottage off the ground, are invited to an organizational meeting February 13 at the Holiday Inn in Lake George
