A student at RPI is in federal custody for trying to buy what the university calls an assault rifle.
Here's the message RPI sent out about what happened.
The school says federal authorities and the school's public safety officers prevented the student from buying the weapon.
"The student was permanently removed from the university and remains in federal custody. At no time were guns or ammunition on the Rensselaer campus, nor was there any immediate threat to the campus community."
