The school says federal authorities and the school's public safety officers prevented the student from buying the weapon.

"The student was permanently removed from the university and remains in federal custody. At no time were guns or ammunition on the Rensselaer campus, nor was there any immediate threat to the campus community."

It's not clear what kind of gun the student was trying to buy, how authorities prevented it, or why the student was arrested.
