Brown's colleagues are in shock. Friends say John Brown had an ever-present smile and a contagious laugh and they can't believe he's gone.

He was a 45-year-old deputy with a bright future. Brown had been on the job with Saratoga County for almost 13 years.

A graduate of South Glens Falls High School, Brown served in the Marines and with the local police department before joining the sheriff's office. He patrolled out of Clifton Park and Halfmoon and was a part of the bike patrol. Brown was a husband and a father of a 2-year-old boy. Friends say Brown's smile was biggest when he was with his wife and son, Miles.

The sheriff says they were shocked that Brown died while jogging. He was a fitness fanatic who took part in triathlons.

"He loved to run 20 miles at a rip, just liked to stay in shape. He was a great fit for our bicycle patrol. He would just take the bike and go. Check the different trails throughout the county. John would go with the bike at these community events and talk with the kids. Great with the kids," recalled Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo.

The sheriff says he hasn't heard yet what the autopsy showed. Deputy Brown lived in Albany with his wife and son. The sheriff says services are being worked out now.
