Crowds rush in to snag that perfect Saratoga spot

July 20, 2018 01:41 PM

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Fans in the Spa City started lining up outside the gates shortly after midnight. Then, at 7 a.m. it was a mad dash to get that perfect picnic table.

The annual tradition went off pretty well as track stars and traditionalists employed their own strategy to find their choice spot around the grounds of the Saratoga Race Course.

"Me and a couple of the other younger guys in the office got stuck making the run," said Nick Smith, who camped out since 3 a.m.

"It's been a tradition for a long time, we all grew up here, we love Saratoga and this is our favorite day of the year besides Travers," said Ian Cirenza, there with four friends.

"We have a good time," said Ralph Kennison of South Glens Falls. "We always like coming, just seeing all the people. Years ago, they just opened the gates and flood in. Now it's controlled chaos."

After the run, it was downtime. After all, post time was not until 1 p.m., six hours later.
