SCHENECTADY - By early afternoon on Wednesday, the snow in the middle of Jackson Avenue in Schenectady was plowed. People who live there, inconvenienced and infuriated by the inefficient city snow removal, are still wondering what took so long?
"It has just been a catastrophe," said Greg Hennel, the owner of Stadium Golf Course at the end of Jackson Avenue." “People are getting stuck everywhere."
For Schenectady residents who just happen to live on a street that is NOT designated a priority, life can be pretty miserable after a bad snow storm.
"It's horrible," said Billie, a long time city resident, "It's bad here. You can't drive, and people are getting stuck."
People WERE getting stuck, car wheels kept spinning, elderly folks who needed groceries had to navigate on foot through snow and slush in the middle of the street.
"Jackson Avenue has been pretty good for many years," says Susan Law, "But this is the worst I've seen it with the plowing."
The problem up until midday on Wednesday is that the city snow plows didn't do the job. That can create hardship on any street, but especially on Jackson Avenue.
"The street here is mostly elderly and the disabled," Jason Planck, a Jackson Street resident pointed out, "At the end of the month, we get our checks and we have to get out and get our rent paid. This storm hit just before the first of the month and a lot of people didn't have groceries. When you're living on a fixed income it's kind of hard."
At high noon, a city snow plow finally made its way to Jackson Avenue, but before that happened, Greg Hennel took things in to his own hands, using equipment from his golf course to plow the entire street.
"I'm not sure where the problem is but I certainly would like to get it fixed," Hennel stated, "If elderly folks need medical assistance or emergency assistance, you can't get a truck down here right now. (The city) should absolutely take care of this but if the resources aren't there, I guess me and my guys will do it."
