"Schoharie County is an amazing place to live I've had job offers in other parts of the state but the people of Schoharie County is what's it's all about," Dan Smith said.

Dan, his wife and three teenage daughters were getting dinner ready at home Monday night when Dan says he heard a tornado like sound outside his door.

"I went out to see what was going on and as soon as I open the door i get hit by a wall of flames."

The fire spread quickly and Dan, a volunteer firefighter got everyone out safely including his dog and cat but the family was left with just the clothes on their back. It didn't take long for friends and strangers alike to step up.

"The community has just been so awesome to us we have beds dressers nightstands everything we could think of at this point.""i know Dan does a real lot for the community," Darcy Gray, owner of the Your Way Cafe said.s

When Gray heard about the fire, she turned a planned party after the parade into a benefit to raise money for the Smiths.

"If you have your dance shoes you better bring them because I'm going to make you dance regardless," Sarah Keller said.

A Go Fund Me page has raised more than half its goal and check donations continue to come into the Sheriff's department for them.

"Each day they kind of think of things they lost and it kind of hurts a little bit but we're all doing the best we can I think find a little humor in life and we're all looking toward the future," Smith said.

The benefit raised more than $7,000 thanks to the community, Your Way Cafe and the Cobleskill Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
