Seasonal hiring underway in many stores

It is hard to believe that the holiday season is just a few weeks, so seasonal hiring is happening right now.

“[In the] middle of October it starts picking up a little bit, November it gets much busier. December is crazy,” said the manager of G. Willikers, Kevin Murphy.

Murphy has been a manager at G. Willikers in Albany since 1995. With the holiday season just a few weeks away, he is looking for some extra hands to help with the holiday rush.

The holiday shopping forecast for this year looks strong. The National Retail Federation projections show sales should be up anywhere between 3.8 and 4.2 percent over 2018.

Melissa O’Connor with the Retail Council of New York State says increased sales mean high demand for seasonal workers.

“The industry is indicating that there is going to be between 530,000 and 590,000 new jobs for seasonal employees,” added O’Connor.

Seasonal retail positions include cashiers, stock help, customer service, and security personnel.

According to, big box stores hiring in the Capital Region include stores like Target, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Boscov’s, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

If you are looking for smaller scale, try Pottery Barn, Bath and Body Works, The Children’s Place, or G. Willikers.

Murphy says working at G. Willikers is a fun way to help others choose the right gift while paying for some of your own.
