SHEFFIELD, Mass. – The community in Sheffield was shaken Wednesday after learning five people were found dead in a house on Home Road after a house fire.
“It's just very, very sad and we've never had this happen in our community,” said resident Deb Segalla.
Berkshire County District Attorney Andrea Harrington said a fire broke out at the home on Home Road just before 8 a.m. Wednesday.
“We watched that house get built over the last year or two so it was really sad, really sad to hear about,” said Michael Sharry who works in Sheffield.
Harrington said several fire departments responded to the scene. She said once the fire was out, they discovered one person was dead. However, Harrington said during a second search of the home, they found four more people dead.
“It’s really hard to hear about something like this and no it does not happen often, so it's truly a shock to us,” said Sharry.
NewsChannel 13’s media partners at the Berkshire Eagle are reporting of the five dead, three are children. The Berkshire Eagle is identifying the victims as Luke Karpinski and his wife, Justine Wilbur, both 41 years old. They said the children that died are 7-year-old twins Alex and Zoe and 3-year-old Marek. However, investigators have yet to release the names of the victims or causes of death.
While many in town wait to learn more information, they said it’s in times like this their small community needs to come together.
“I just hope everybody can gather together and support the family and friends,” said Segalla.
Harrington said the incident is an ongoing, extensive investigation with local and state agencies.
