CLIFTON PARK - The patriotism was palpable.

Here in Skano Elementary's auditorium the pride in our country was exceeded only by pride in family.

Each veteran being recognized Friday was invited by a son or daughter, grandson, niece or nephew.

There were patriotic songs and a special speech from NY Air National Guard Navigator Major Amanda Coonradt, who has two young children of her own, including a 4-and-a-half-year old daughter.

Coonradt shared what her military service has taught her to teach her daughter.

"She has her own voice, she has her own power and the world is at her fingertips. She can do and achieve anything she strives to do."

The current service members and veterans were recognized for their sacrifices. Each student shook hands and thanked them.

"It means a great deal that the community comes together, especially seeing at this level where a lot of these kids have been affected by the different conflicts around the world," said Alex Smith who served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

It was also meaningful to the kids who got to see their loved ones honored.

"It means a lot, because I'm lucky, because some people's dads and moms can't come to this assembly, because they're currently serving and I'm just lucky that he's here," said Alex's daughter, Sophia Smith, a 5th grader.

"I just love that he's here and that he gets to be here with me and that I'm very proud of him."

The students and their families also made donations to Operation Adopt-a-Soldier, helping those who can't be here with their families.
