Siena College President Brother F. Edward Coughlin has suffered a massive stroke.

The college says Coughlin was having surgery in Rochester to repair a congenital heart defect he's had since birth – and an unrelated complication led to the stroke.

Doctors continue to monitor his condition. As of Friday, he had not regained consciousness.

Around 250 people attended a prayer service at the college for Coughlin on Friday morning.

For now, Dr. Margaret Madden will continue as acting president.
