LOUDONVILLE - Siena College is taking away the honorary degree it gave to Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the former Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Washington.
The executive committee of Siena's Board of Trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to make the move after Pope Francis ordered McCarrick to a life of penance and prayer for sexually abusing minors.
McCarrick was awarded the honorary degree in May of 2007.
This is the first time Siena has ever rescinded a degree. The president of the college says they are doing it as an act of compassion for and solidarity with those who have suffered.
