Skeletal remains found by contractor working on private property in Columbia County

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says human skeletal remains were found in the area just off of 1590 Route 9J in Stuyvesant, NY, Sunday afternoon. The area where the remains were found is at the top of a very steep hill in a wooded location on a private property. The top of the hill remains blocked off with crime tape at this time. The Columbia County Sheriff, David Bartlett, says they received a call from a contractor working in the area on a piece of excavation equipment at around 1p.m. Sunday when he located the skeletal remains. The Sheriff says they responded to the call with both sheriff's deputies and investigators. Authorities say they do not believe these are new remains and are working with a state anthropologist and a pathologist to determine the age of the remains. The Sheriff's Office says the investigation is in it's infancy stages and no additional information is available at this time.
