ALBANY - There are few things as personal and important as giving a loved one who's passed away a lasting tribute. For years, one woman has been wanting to serve people during their time of need. Now, she has the chance.

SL Mclaughlin Funeral Home in Albany has been open for about a month, but for more than 20 years, Albany native Shannon Mclaughlin has wanted to bring quality service and support to people during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

She thought she would be passing judgment on lawbreakers as a judge, but turns out she would be seeing people at the end of life -- and making no judgments.

Dreams don't always evolve in a straight line and after graduating with a mortuary science degree, she went on to become a flight attendant and then a nurse. However, that was not enough.

She had interned at a funeral home in New York City. They taught her everything. However, starting her own business wouldn't be easy.

She has had several services since opening and hopes to make one of the biggest talks in a lifetime a little easier for people to have.

With only one African American funeral home in Albany, she's also proud to provide African Americans more choices, but foremost -- she wants to be of service to others in their time of need.
